And yes, of course that pun was intended. Thankfully, the first season took many by surprise in offering a fun-filled (but often poignant) romp through Minecraft -inspired worlds and scenarios, with Minecraft: Story Mode: Season Two looking to build on that foundation even further. Personally, I'm looking forward to future chapters that the game has in store.Prior to the start of the first season of Minecraft: Story Mode, developer Telltale Games' take on the massively popular Minecraft franchise, no one knew quite what to expect from the mixture of the endless creativity that Minecraft offers with the more linear, focused narratives that Telltale has made its name on producing, thanks to its titles like The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us. Then again, if you're the type of person who enjoys stuff like the Lego movie or SpongeBob SquarePants, then you will feel right at home with Minecraft Story Mode. As such, it won't strike the fancy of gamers who prefer more mature fare. It's certainly amusing for sure but doesn't quite have the drama and sense of urgency you get from Telltale's other games. The story itself features a lot of humor, which should especially tickle the funny bones of kids.Īlthough its unique look and charming tale is a strong point for the game, it also is its Achilles heel. These include crafting items from materials, which you have to do several times in the game in order to progress. At the same time, it also adds some Minecraft touches to distinguish itself from other Telltale games. You also get an element of choice, which affects certain paths that the story will take. These include fights against zombies and monsters, which is typically done with clicking on a trigger button. Voice acting is also solid, making the game feel like a Saturday morning cartoon.Īs with past Telltale offerings, Minecraft Story Mode mixes up the pace with quick time events as well as some scripted action. Yes, it still features Minecraft's trademark blockiness and pixelated look down to its prompts and menus, but it also features higher resolution and a cleaner look overall. The visual style of the game definitely emulates its source material, albeit with sharper graphics. Eventually, they embark on a quest to seek the remaining legendary heroes from "The Order of the Stone" in order to take down a formidable foe. As with all Telltale stories, however, things don't quite go the smooth and easy route and the members of our blocky gang find themselves knee deep in an emergency that threatens their blocky world. This particular tale centers on a group of friends eyeing victory at "Endercon," which features a contest that rewards the best builders. Well, that or a highly sanitized version of South Park. In that sense, it's like playing a Lego video game. The story is interesting enough for older audiences as well, including those who never experienced a Minecraft game.
